Why Movember is an Effective Initiative

Movember is a global charity that aims to spread awareness about men’s health, while growing a moustache throughout the month of November. The growth of the moustache is accompanied by fundraising for the Movember Foundation, whose objective is to increase early detection, diagnosis and effective treatments. Here are some statistics that drive these initiatives:

  • Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men worldwide, with over 1.1 million recorded cases in 2012.
  • Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men, but is often forgotten due to early detection. Prognosis is not always hopeful.
  • One man dies every minute from suicide around the world – a result of poor mental health
  • Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality in men

Here are some reasons Movember is an effective initiative with the help of a whimsical trend that went viral:

Let’s face it. No one sports a moustache anymore. Perhaps 40 years ago, men paraded around with a moustache to keep up with the ongoing trend. Today, if you rock the former pinnacle of manliness, you’ll be perceived as someone who stands out. The idea is to invoke curiosity so you can begin educating. Attention drawn… check!

Growing a moustache for a cause creates a reason to solicit donations. Committing to looking foolish during an entire month, as your moustache awkwardly grows out is definitely not the most comfortable situation. In a sense, the self-ridicule is inflicted upon oneself for a good cause and makes an already difficult question to ask friends and family somewhat more feasible – asking for money. The fact is the initiative is given much more meaning.

Finally, growing a moustache is instantly appealing to men of all ages and facilitates inviting friends to get on board. Besides, who said a little healthy competition among friends ever hurt anyone? The same can be said about the workplace. Obviously, if your job entails meeting with clients, perhaps a conservative moustache would be optimal, as you would want to avoid looking like a “creepster” (a cross between a hipster and a creep).

Tailbase supports Movember. We are committed to raising funds that will go toward cancer research and various programs for mental health. We have come up with different ideas to have our team invested. One of them involves two of our employees battling it out to be the “big moustache on campus”. Pictures will follow.

We appreciate you taking the time to read our post. Support Movember by liking Tailbase on Facebook. When you like us, you will receive a free “Movember Sale” banner. Also, as a second incentive, we have decided to hold a draw at the end of the month. The winner will receive a free creative design for an eblast campaign of their choice. The prize will be applicable as of January 2016.

So mum’s not the word! Spread the news.
